| The Donkey Sanctuary is a haven for
donkeys that have been mistreated, neglected, retired from working on the
beaches or simply cannot be cared for any longer by their owners.
Since Dr. Elisabeth Svendsen founded the Sanctuary in 1969, over 7,500 of these gentle creatures have been taken into care, which makes it the largest Sanctuary for donkeys in the world. Based just outside of Sidmouth in Devon, United Kingdom, the Donkey Sanctuary's headquarters at Slade House Farm is home to around 600 donkeys. The majority of these are elderly and are kept here to be close to the veterinary department. There are ten other farms also owned by the Sanctuary where the remainder of our donkeys are cared for by our dedicated staff. Once fully recovered, some of the younger, fitter donkeys are rehomed
but they remain under the protection of the Donkey Sanctuary and are checked
regularly.

arena situated within the grounds of the Donkey Sanctuary. it caters for
children with special needs and disabilities who can benefit greatly from
